This is a page of the Armstrong tiles catalogue from 1958. While the tiles do contain asbestos, the fibres are not easily released. However the adhesive used to secure the tiles often contained asbestos too and is difficult to remove without releasing fibres. A “rule of thumb” is that if the adhesive is black it contains asbestos and should NOT be sanded back, but if it is yellow it doesn’t. If in doubt, get it tested.
